A postcard from a childhood sweetheart. A wedding dress in a jar. Barbed wire. Silicone breast implants. Red stilettos, never worn. These objects and many others make up the inspiring, whimsical, sometimes bizarre, and always unforgettable population of the real-life Museum of Broken Relationships. A decade ago, two lovers were struggling through their own painful breakup, desperate to heal their heartbreak without destroying the memory of the love they had shared. Then, an idea struck: they would create a communal space, a kind of refuge for - and cathartic celebration of - the everyday objects that had outlasted love. These items, along with the anonymous, intimate stories each piece represented, quickly captured hearts and imaginations across the globe. As word spread, the tiny museum became a worldwide sensation. Collected here are 203 of the best, funniest, most heartwarming and thought-provoking pieces that offer an irresistible experience of human connection. Best known for his wry and incisive takes on American life and politics, Garry Trudeau is among the world's most widely read cartoonists. Trudeau began shaping Doonesbury as an undergraduate contributor to the Yale Daily News in 1968.Today, the strip is syndicated to a daily readership of nearly 100 million. Trudeau's work has been anthologized before, but this is the first book to assess the art of the comic strip and the ways that Trudeau's iconic style has evolved over the past four decades. Brian Walker, an expert on the history of comics, sheds light on Trudeau's early influences as well as on his creative process, from research to pencil layouts to finished artwork. In addition to revealing how Doonesbury is crafted each week, the book also examines Trudeau's magazine illustrations, animation drawings, posters, and product designs, as well as rare and previously unpublished works. Walker's historical text is complemented by insightful commentary by Trudeau and his collaborators, Don Carleton, George Corsillo, and David Stanford, making this book appealing not only to Doonesbury's many fans but also to those looking for an approach to the work of a master comic strip artist. ]]>
Oh Sh*t... Designers today are striving to transform our relationship with the natural world. While the modern industrial age gave way to designs that vastly improved human enterprise through technology, there were unintended and destructive consequences for the environment. Humans are intrinsically linked to nature yet our actions have frayed this relationship, forcing designers to think more intentionally and to consider the impact of every design decision, from an artifact's manufacture and use to its obsolescence. Designers are aligning with biologists, engineers, agriculturists, environmentalists and many other disciplines to design a more harmonious and regenerative future. Based on these new partnerships, designers are asking different questions and anticipating future challenges, which not only change the design process, but also what design means. Nature: Collaborations in Design includes over sixty-five international projects from the fields of architecture, product design, landscape design, fashion, interactive and communication design, and material research. More than 300 compelling and exquisite photographs, illustrations and content from data visualizations illustrate seven essays, which explain and explore designers' strategies around understanding, simulating, salvaging, facilitating, augmenting, remediating and nurturing nature. M. W. Turner. He had a precocious gift that was developed over a lifetime of experiment and innovation. This classic book in the World of Art series traces the artist's career - from youthful pictureseque views and watercolours of 'Gothic' ruins to the romantic landscape and historical compositions of his maturity, and the astonishing art of his later years. In these late paintings Turner's tragic sense of life is stated most profoundly and the work was unintelligible to his contemporaries - but his reputation as the greatest British painter now rests on our understanding of these as pioneering explorations of abstraction, prefiguring the art of the 20th century. Graham Reynolds weaves together the artist's biography with sensitive criticism of his work, through all phases of his career, in this classic work - first published in 1969 - that has long served as an outstanding introduction to Turner's life and art. It has now been revised and updated by the curator of the Turner Bequest at Tate, David Blayney Brown, to reflect recent discoveries and interpretations, and the illustrations are in full colour for the first time. It will serve as the best available study of this perennially popular artist for a new generation of readers.
Author: Marc Riboud

Format: Paperback / softback

Number of Pages: 144

A member of Magnum, Marc Riboud has travelled the world, from Europe to the Middle East and from Vietnam to the United States. In one of the most astounding archaeological discoveries of all time, the Terracotta Warriors were discovered by chance by farmers in 1974. We now understand that the excavated pits containing nearly eight thousand warriors and hundreds of horses are only part of a much grander mausoleum complex. There is a great deal still to be discovered and understood about the entire area whichis now thought to cover around 100 square kilometres. Throughout history, the talent of creative women - from artists to writers to filmmakers - has been undervalued, with the title of 'genius' reserved mainly for men. More than a Museunpacks the complex romantic relationships that have often ensured women remain overshadowed, anonymous and ripped off. Katie McCabe shines a light on the women who deserved credit in their time, revealing the true stories of talents like Dora Maar (the photographer, painter and writer who was reduced to the role of 'Picasso's lover') and Alma Reville (the backseat director of Hitchcock's films). By exploring a broad scope of art movements and artists (from surrealism to silent film), she overthrows the well-worn narratives in order to give wronged female creatives the credit they deserve. Those newly given the spotlight include sculptor Camille Claudel, painter Josephine Hopper and Shirley du Graham Bois, a playwright and civil rights activist who contributed to the Harlem Renaissance. More than a Muse re-examines our history through the lens of artistic partnership, and puts women firmly in the foreground. From 1973 to the mid-80s they had a string of hits, including 'Down, Down', 'Rockin' All Over the World', 'Again and Again', 'What You're Proposing' - all classic rock anthems. When the band imploded, and the other members left, Rossi and Parfitt reinvented Quo for the 90s and kept going, touring constantly and winning new fans. The story of Status Quo is essentially the story of two people: Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt. It is the story of two outwardly very different characters - Rossi, the moody insecure one, Parfitt, the smiling, permanantly at ease golden boy - who against the odds forged an unlikely yet enduring bond that would see them through the dizzying highs and terrifying lows of a forty-year career. Rossi and Parfitt admit that in the past they've hidden some of the truth about their lives, unable to admit how out of control things were even to themselves. Now they tell it all - the drug-taking, the marriage breakdowns, Parfitt's brush with death when he was forced to undergo by-pass surgery. These essays, collected from the pages of The Economist's Intelligent Life magazine, reveal the special hold that some museums have over us all. Acclaimed novelist William Boyd visits the Leopold Museum in Vienna--a shrine to his favorite artist, Egon Schiele, whom Boyd first discovered on a postcard as a University student. In front of her favorite Rodins, Allison Pearson recalls a traumatic episode she suffered at the hands of a schoolteacher following a trip to the Musee in Paris. In 2017, Leonardo da Vinci's small oil painting the Salvator Mundi was sold at auction. In the words of its discoverer, the image of Christ as savior of the world is "the rarest thing on the planet." Its $450 million sale price also makes it the world's most expensive painting. For two centuries, art dealers had searched in vain for the Holy Grail of art history: a portrait of Christ as the Salvator Mundi by Leonardo da Vinci. Many similar paintings of greatly varying quality had been executed by Leonardo's assistants in the early sixteenth century. But where was the original by the master himself? In November 2017, Christie's auction house announced they had it. But did they? The Last Leonardo tells a thrilling tale of a spellbinding icon invested with the power to make or break the reputations of scholars, billionaires, kings, and sheikhs. Ben Lewis takes us to Leonardo's studio in Renaissance Italy; to the court of Charles I and the English Civil War; to Amsterdam, Moscow, and New Orleans; to the galleries, salerooms, and restorer's workshop as the painting slowly, painstakingly emerged from obscurity. The vicissitudes of the highly secretive art market are charted across six centuries. It is a twisting tale of geniuses and oligarchs, double-crossings and disappearances, in which we're never quite certain what to believe. Above all, it is an adventure story about the search for lost treasure, and a quest for the truth. Praise for The Last Leonardo "The story of the world's most expensive painting is narrated with great gusto and formidably researched detail in Ben Lewis's book. . . . Lewis's probings of the Salvator's backstory raise questions about its historical status and visibility, and these lead in turn to the fundamental question of whether the painting is really an autograph work by Leonardo."-Charles Nicholl, The Guardian "As the art historian and critic Ben Lewis shows in his forensically detailed and gripping investigation into the history, discovery and sales of the painting, establishing the truth is like nailing down jelly."- Michael Prodger, The Sunday Times
Author: Robin Petravic

Format: Hardback

Number of Pages: 256

"beautiful, richly photographic lifestyle book on interior design using tile from Heath Ceramics" "Heath Ceramics is an incredibly well-regarded, iconic housewares brand beloved in design circles for its gorgeous ceramic tiles and tableware, the latter of which is used at respected restaurants around the world, including RN74 and The Slanted Door in San Francisco, Chez Panisse in Berkeley, Gjelina in Los Angeles, The Girl and Goat in Chicago, and The Standard Hotel in New York City. In the first years of the Weimar Republic, the German psychiatrist Hans Prinzhorn gathered a remarkable collection of works by schizophrenic patients that would astonish and delight the world. The Prinzhorn collection, as it was called, inspired a new generation of artists, including Paul Klee, Max Ernst and Salvador Dali. What the doctor could not have known, however, was that these works would later be used to prepare the ground for mass-murder. Soon after his rise to power, Hitler-a failed artist of the old school-declared war on modern art. The Nazis staged giant 'Degenerate Art' shows to ridicule the avant-garde, and seized and destroyed the cream of Germany's modern art collections. This action was mere preparation, however, for the even more sinister campaign Hitler would later wage against so-called "degenerate" people, and Prinzhorn's artists were caught up in both. Bringing together inspirational art history, genius and madness, and the wanton cruelty of the fanatical "artist-Fuhrer", this astonishing story lays bare the culture war that paved the way for Hitler's first extermination programme, the psychiatric Holocaust.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/7646/9701/products/th_1c147b81-6398-4604-a7be-2ee8b2096456.jpg?v=1638268672
9781623658335-film-in-five-seconds
Film in Five Seconds
Author: H-57

Format: Paperback / softback

Number of Pages: 320

In today's jet-fueled, caffeine-charged, celebrity-a-minute world, who actually has the time to watch a film from start to finish? When it comes to technological superiority in Asia, industrialization, aerospace technology, and architecture can even be mentioned in the same breath. The Communist government has understood how to present itself internationally with the help of global media events such as 2008 Summer Olympics or Expo 2010 in Shanghai. One almost has the impression that the People's Republic of China has become an open-air museum of architectural superlatives. But if the glance at this Far Eastern country were not a European one, it would be uncritical and unconsidered? As was already the case during the industrialisation of Europe and North America, Chinese urban agglomerations face the barely surmountable challenges of adapting both their urban infrastructures and the supply of living space to cope with increasing migration to the cities. Beijing's powerful regime is still trying to regulate internal migration but has now reached the limits of how much it can control its citizens, faced with just under 200 million migrant workers who represent China's guarantee of economic development. As internationally successful as architects may be, in their native countries their activities in Communist China are not always seen in a positive light. Not infrequently they are accused of designing projects for China which would be almost impossible to realize in their own countries because of building and environmental regulations. Set against that backdrop, this book presents a small selection of over 30 successful projects by Chinese and foreign architects who have been willing to take up the challenge of making a contribution to international debate.
Author: Melvyn Bragg

Format: Video (VHS)

Number of Pages:

Sir Anthony Caro (b. 1924) is one of Britain's most eminent living sculptors. Her last album, 21, sold 30 million copies worldwide. Now, with a third album slated for a November 2015 release, the music industry is turning itself inside out. With a record-equaling six Grammy's, two Brit Awards, a certified diamond album, and Beyonce and Madonna citing her as an influence, Adele is the sleeping giant of the music scene. She is also a notoriously private, reclusive person (rumour has it she turned down an GBP80 million offer to tour next year), which puts the stories behind her profound love songs at even more of a premium.
