They quickly grew into fashion icons, donning sherbet-swirled Pucci dresses and lacquering their hair into extravagant rocket styles (to match their husbands' spaceships). 'I tried to follow the road but the rushing waters pushed me into a deep rut where I lost my footing and was swept away downstream in the overflow of the river ... I got very frightened at the noise, and the water swept me along ... but I kept saying to myself, "Don't panic." Hampered by the big mail bag I let it go and within seconds the water swept it out of sight.' Lyn Berlowitz, Bullita Station, Nt From ABC Local Radio Manager of Emergency Broadcasting and senior journalist Ian Mannix comes a collection of 15 stories of humour, survival and courage in the face of one of our country's most powerful natural forces - flood. Across Grantham to Condamine, Kempsey to Bullita Station, flood has devastated this wide brown land, in some instances bringing much needed relief from drought, but in many others bringing tragedy, homelessness and a fight for survival. Ian Mannix charts the pattern of floods in Australia and tells amazing stories of danger and survival, from the women trapped in a house infested with snakes as the floodwaters rose ever higher, to the helicopter rescues of people whose homes were inundated without warning, to the brave townsfolk who saved their outback Queensland towns from the menace of the Warego River with all the odds stacked against them. As in Ian's previous book Great Australian Bushfire Stories, these fascinating accounts from the lips of those who have experienced disaster will give you an understanding of what it is like to face nature at its most deadly, how to prepare and how to recover from its shocking impact.
9781742613086-secondhand-second-suns-two-doctors-and-their-amazing-quest-to-restore-sight-and-save-lives
Second Suns: Two Doctors and Their Amazing Quest to Restore Sight and Save Lives
NB: This is a secondhand book in very good condition. Tabin was the high-achieving bad boy of Harvard Medical School, an accomplished mountain climber and adrenaline junkie as brilliant as he was unconventional. Ruit grew up in a remote Nepalese village, where he became intimately acquainted with the human costs of inadequate access to health care. Together they found their life's calling: tending to the afflicted people of the Himalayas, a vast mountainous region with an alarmingly high incidence of cataract blindness. Second Suns takes us from improvised plywood operating tables in villages without electricity or plumbing to state-of-the-art surgical centres at major American universities where these two driven men are restoring sight - and hope - to patients from around the world. With their revolutionary, inexpensive style of surgery, Tabin and Ruit have been able to cure tens of thousands. David Oliver Relin brings the doctors' work to vivid life through poignant portraits of patients helped by the surgery, from old men who cannot walk treacherous mountain trails unaided to children who have not seen their mothers' faces for years.
9781568521879-secondhand-tragedy-and-triumph-the-journals-of-captain-r-f-scotts-last-polar-expedition
Tragedy and Triumph: The Journals of Captain R.F. Only hours before, the town of Darwin was winding down for the holiday season. Like many people that day, Josephine Foreman spent the morning cooking a large turkey for Christmas lunch; Geoff Crane took the opportunity to finish some last-minute Christmas shopping. Reports of an approaching cyclone were taken lightly-after all, the last cyclone had been little more than a storm with a bit more wind. Besides, it was Christmas. At midnight on Christmas Eve, Cyclone Tracy roared in from the Arafura Sea and in six hours wiped out Darwin. It was Australia's worst natural disaster-a night of fear and horror, a storm of unprecedented savagery and destruction. Winds of 300 kilometres per hour totally destroyed nearly all of Darwin's buildings and caused the deaths of more than fifty people. When Christmas Day finally dawned, many counted themselves lucky to still be alive. Twenty-seven years later, some of those who lived through the cyclone's devastation recall their frightening experiences-from the sheer terror of the storm itself, to the heart-wrenching days that followed and the mass clean-up operation and evacuation of more than 20 000 people in six days. This is a compelling account of tragedy, survival and human courage. The noise level rose sharply once the roof went, and thunder exploded all around them.they could hear the sound of debris and swirling glass.coming from the hallway. They were more or less trapped in their own refuge and didn't dare open the door for fear of being shredded by the churning glass.
NB: This is a secondhand book in very good condition. On 25 April 1915, the day the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli, Lieutenant Commander Dacre Stoker set out as captain of the Australian submarine AE2 on a mission to navigate the Dardanelles Strait. The Dardanelles is a treacherous 56-kilometre stretch of water running along and behind the Gallipoli Peninsula where the Allied landings took place. It leads into the sea of Marmara; and at the other end of that sea, Istanbul. That Stoker managed to find a way through the narrow Dardanelles against unknown currents, mines and withering enemy fire has been described as "the finest feat in submarine history". Stoker's achievement meant much in military terms, but even more emotionally in boosting the morale of the embattled Allied troops. "Stoker's Submarine" tells the story of a remarkable naval hero, who, until now, has been little celebrated.
NB: This is a secondhand book in very good condition. As enigmatic in life as in death, Mollie Dean was a woman determined to transcend. Creatively ambitious and sexually precocious, at twenty-five she was a poet, aspiring novelist and muse on the peripheries of Melbourne's bohemian salons - until one night in 1930 she was brutally slain by an unknown killer in a laneway while walking home. Her family was implicated. Those in her circle, including her acclaimed artist lover Colin Colahan, were shamed. Her memory was anxiously suppressed. Yet the mystery of her death rendered more mysterious her life and Mollie's story lingered, incorporated into memoir, literature, television, theatre and song, most notably in George Johnston's classic My Brother Jack. In A Scandal in Bohemia, Gideon Haigh explodes the true crime genre with a murder story about life as well as death. Armed with only a single photograph and echoes of Mollie's voice, he has reassembled the precarious life of a talented woman without a room of her own - a true outsider, excluded by the very world that celebrated her in its art. In this work of restorative justice, Mollie Dean emerges as a tenacious, charismatic, independent woman for whom society had no place, and whom everybody tried to forget - but nobody could. 'Haigh's narrative takes shape through powerful "layers of association" ... as much a portrait of Mollie's life and death as it is a portrayal of the city and the society in which she lived.' Australian Book Review 'In this latest addition to his true crime oeuvre, Melbourne journalist and polymath Gideon Haigh attempts to uncover Dean's life as well as her death... the book is a fascinating exploration.' She cared for her baby for three years until the Church took him from her and sold him, like countless others, to America for adoption. Thirteen months after Australia's most famous canine warrior went missing in action following an historic battle between the elite SAS and the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2008, she was found by an American Special Forces officer patrolling a village in a region known to be a Taliban stronghold. Against all odds, Sarbi had survived her injuries, the enemy's weapons, a bitter winter, one brutal summer and the harsh unforgiving landscape on her own. She was the miracle dog of Tarin Kot. Sarbi's story, and those of the other brave Australian Army dogs in Afghanistan, will resonate with anyone who has known the unconditional love of man's best friend, and understands the rewards of unbidden loyalty, trust and devotion. It will appeal to all those who appreciate the selflessness of serving your country and the inherent dangers of putting your life on the line for others in a war zone. And it will strike a chord with anyone who has experienced the magical connection with a dog.
NB: This is a secondhand book in very good condition. From the start, the fluffy new member of the household proved an enigma, displaying a twelve-snort vocabulary, an ability to climb trees (the better to chase parrots) and a disdain for suburbia. It was the Emergency department of a Sydney hospital, telling them that their eldest son Thomas had been in an altercation and that they were to come at once. Thomas had been coward punched by a total stranger within two minutes of getting out of a taxi in Kings Cross, on his way to a private 18th birthday party of a friend. Two days after that first phone call Kathy and Ralph were told that their son had suffered catastrophic head injuries resulting in brain death. They were advised that there was no other option but to switch off his life support. He was 18 years old. In the aftermath of their son's death, Kathy and Ralph became the public face of the campaign to end the drunken violence that plagued Sydney's major nightspots. Along with Premiers Barry O'Farrell and Mike Baird they helped institute the lock out laws that have been a major factor in the reduction of alcohol related deaths and injuries in Darling Harbour, Kings Cross and Sydney's CBD. They were also instrumental in creating Take Kare Safe Spaces ('Kare' with a 'K' after Thomas's initials) for young people in key nightspots, which has now registered over 52,000 interventions since December 2014, what the Kellys call 'sliding door moments', the difference between a young person's life continuing on as normal or degenerating into something terrible. And they were one of the driving forces behind the introduction of tougher sentencing for 'coward-punch' deaths. But their campaigning created a huge toll on their family. Online intimidation, death threats and false news about the mishandling of donations came from those with a stake in the clubs and businesses who were the lock out laws financial losers. When Stuart Kelly, Thomas's younger brother, went for his first night at University of Sydney's St Paul's College, Ralph and Kathy believe the bullying he experienced because of the family's profile was so traumatising he left university for good the next day, and wouldn't tell his parents exactly what he'd been made to endure. Five months later, on July 25th 2016, Stuart took his own life. This book is the Kellys' story. How they coped with one unimaginable tragedy, only to find that it had sowed the seed for another. How in the face of these terrible losses they have found the spirit and the drive to campaign first for a safer environment for all our children, and for a greater understanding of young people's self-harm and its drivers.
9780732290061-secondhand-the-complete-book-of-heroic-australian-women-twenty-one-pioneering-women-whose-stories-changed-history
The Complete Book of Heroic Australian Women: Twenty-one Pioneering Women Whose Stories Changed History
NB: This is a secondhand book in very good condition. The stories in "The Lost Explorers" are tragic, mysterious, thrilling, riproaring; their subjects include heroes, villains and misguided innocents. Shortly after leaving Changi Airport, an explosion shattered Engine 2 of Qantas flight QF32 - an Airbus A380, the largest and most advanced passenger plane ever built. Hundreds of pieces of shrapnel ripped through the wing and fuselage, creating chaos as vital flight systems and back-ups were destroyed or degraded. In other hands, the plane might have been lost with all 469 people on board, but a supremely experienced flight crew, led by Captain Richard de Crespigny, managed to land the crippled aircraft and safely disembark the passengers after hours of nerve-racking effort. Tracing Richard's life and career up until that fateful flight, QF32 shows exactly what goes into the making of a top-level airline pilot, and the extraordinary skills and training needed to keep us safe in the air. Fascinating in its detail and vividly compelling in its narrative, QF32 is the riveting, blow-by-blow story of just what happens when things go badly wrong in the air, told by the captain himself. These two men were chosen for their medical expertise and cave diving knowledge, but this dangerous rescue asked so much more of them. They had to remain calm under extreme pressure and intense scrutiny, adapt to constantly changing circumstances and importantly, build trust among the rescue team and with the young boys and their coach, whose lives were in their hands. These eight women had the courage and strength for which the Anzacs are renowned and the compassion and tenderness that only a woman can bring. One brave nursing sister Hilda Samsing became a whistleblower. Nursing aboard the hospital ship Gascon, outraged by the bungled evacuation of wounded Anzacs which was censored out of the press she let her diary be shown in high places which raised questions in the House of Commons. In Belgium, Louise Creed, a Sydney journalist caught in the besieged city of Antwerp made a hair raising escape from a German firing squad and lived to tell the tale. Brisbane's Grace Wilson, ordered to establish an emergency hospital on drought ridden Lemnos Island, arrived there to find suffering Anzacs but no drinking water, tents or medical supplies. Grace and her nurses tore up their petticoats to use as bandages, survived for weeks on bully beef and biscuits and saved the lives of thousands wounded at Lone Pine and the Nek. In November 1915 after a blizzard hit the trenches of Gallipoli they cared for Anzacs with frost-bitten or gangrenous feet. After surviving hardship on Lemnos, young Florence James Wallace works in France near the front line in a Casualty Clearing, treating soldiers with hideous wounds or blinded by mustard gas. The Germans emerged from their trenches and advanced as Florence and her stretcher cases escaped by lorry. In 1918 after years spent nursing men smashed and pulverised by machine gun fire she faced yet another challenge - an epidemic of Spanish flu. They returned to a world that only recognised male courage and were quickly forgotten, two of them awarded such meagre pensions they died destitute and forgotten. "This book will become compulsory reading for every Australian".
