Caley's writings chronicle the raw, untamed world of early colonial Australia, capturing the land's flora, fauna, indigenous peoples, and the fledgling society taking shape around the penal settlement of Sydney with remarkable candour and detail. Edited with scholarly precision by J. E. B. Currey, this edition transforms Caley's original manuscripts and correspondence into an accessible and illuminating historical document.\n\nA vivid primary source of Australian colonial history, this work stands as an invaluable record of a continent on the cusp of transformation, seen through the eyes of a man driven by scientific curiosity rather than imperial ambition. Caley's prose is unvarnished and direct, offering an outsider's perspective that is at once critical of colonial administration and deeply reverent toward the natural world he was sent to catalogue. For historians, naturalists, and anyone captivated by the drama of early Australia, this volume raises a tantalising question: what secrets of a vanishing world did Caley alone think to record?\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Secondhand Stock","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":50572678365403,"sku":"2026100010935-SECONDHAND","price":20.0,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0523\/7646\/9701\/files\/f5c19c2a-1923-4dba-9101-352ae1e8b7c0.png?v=1791167253","url":"https:\/\/bookgrocer.com\/products\/2026100010935-secondhand-reflections-on-the-colony-of-new-south-wales","provider":"Book Grocer","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
