Beltov, first published in 1895 to evade Tsarist censorship. The work presents a rigorous and systematic defence of historical materialism, chronicling the intellectual evolution from idealist philosophy through French materialism to the dialectical materialism of Marx and Engels, situating economic forces as the primary drivers of historical development. Plekhanov argues with forensic precision against the subjective idealism of the Narodnik movement, dismantling their conception of the individual hero as the prime mover of history and replacing it with a sweeping, materialist account of social change.\n\nWritten with the polemical vigour and philosophical erudition that made Plekhanov the father of Russian Marxism, this text stands as one of the most lucid introductions to Marxist historical theory ever produced, praised by Lenin himself as a masterpiece of socialist literature. The Latin epigraph — *Audiatur et altera pars* (Let the other side also be heard) — signals Plekhanov's confidence in the power of rational argument to vanquish opposition. Published here in a 1956 Moscow edition by the Foreign Languages Publishing House, this volume offers a rare window into the ideological world that shaped twentieth-century revolutionary movements — and poses the question of whether history is made by great men, or by the irresistible forces they merely reflect.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Secondhand Stock","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":50572737151195,"sku":"2026100011045-SECONDHAND","price":50.0,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0523\/7646\/9701\/files\/ed4fa57e-42d6-44e7-8186-c696107dc3d3.png?v=1791167414","url":"https:\/\/bookgrocer.com\/products\/2026100011045-secondhand-the-development-of-the-monist-view-of-history","provider":"Book Grocer","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
