Originally published in French as Pour Marx in 1965, this collection of essays argues with formidable intellectual rigour that a profound epistemological break separates the early, humanist writings of Marx from the mature, scientific works — a distinction that places Althusser in direct opposition to those who would reduce Marxism to a simple philosophy of man. The text presents a structuralist reinterpretation of historical materialism, challenging both Stalinist dogma and liberal humanist readings with equal ferocity, translated here into precise and lucid English by Ben Brewster.\n\nAlthusser's style is dense, systematic, and uncompromising — the work of a thinker who demands active intellectual engagement rather than passive consumption. For Marx chronicles the development of a genuinely scientific Marxism, introducing such foundational concepts as overdetermination and ideological state apparatuses that would go on to shape decades of critical theory, cultural studies, and political philosophy. Its influence reverberates through the works of thinkers from Étienne Balibar to Slavoj Žižek, cementing its status as one of the most consequential philosophical texts of the twentieth century. For anyone serious about understanding the theoretical foundations of Marxism — or the nature of ideology itself — this volume remains an indispensable and formidably rewarding challenge.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Secondhand Stock","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":50572801573083,"sku":"2026100011063-SECONDHAND","price":30.0,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0523\/7646\/9701\/files\/d92496b8-2921-45f8-ab51-dc2be8c2cd16.png?v=1791167468","url":"https:\/\/bookgrocer.com\/products\/2026100011063-secondhand-for-marx","provider":"Book Grocer","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
