F. R. Leavis charts a decisive new course through the landscape of modern English verse, arguing with characteristic rigour that poetry had reached a pivotal turning point — one that demanded a fundamental reappraisal of what constituted vitality, intelligence, and seriousness in poetic art. With unflinching authority, he examines the work of T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and Gerard Manley Hopkins, illuminating how these figures broke from a stagnant Georgian tradition to forge a genuinely modern poetic sensibility.\n\nLeavis writes with a precision and moral earnestness that defined the critical movement he helped shape, and his prose carries the unmistakable conviction of a thinker who believed literature to be central to civilised life. First published in 1932, this landmark study reshaped the canon of English poetry and set the terms of debate for generations of critics, scholars, and readers. For anyone seeking to understand the seismic shifts that transformed English verse in the early twentieth century, this work remains as vital and provocative today as when it first appeared.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Secondhand Stock","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":50573253542107,"sku":"2026100011278-SECONDHAND","price":15.0,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0523\/7646\/9701\/files\/3dbb848d-dd41-4c4a-a45d-0b6f448fddc3.png?v=1791167904","url":"https:\/\/bookgrocer.com\/products\/2026100011278-secondhand-new-bearings-in-english-poetry","provider":"Book Grocer","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
