Some Desperate Glory is the harrowing and deeply personal account of Edwin Campion Vaughan's experiences during 1917, one of the most brutal years of the Great War, chronicling his journey from eager subaltern to battle-hardened survivor through the mud and carnage of Passchendaele and the Ypres Salient. Written with an immediacy and emotional honesty that no retrospective history could replicate, the diary presents the daily terror, gallows humour, fierce comradeship, and creeping disillusionment of a generation of young men swallowed by industrial-scale warfare.\n\nWidely regarded as one of the finest firsthand accounts of the First World War, the narrative stands alongside the great literary testimonies of Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves, yet retains a uniquely unguarded quality born from its origins as a private record rather than a crafted memoir. Vaughan's prose is urgent and vivid, placing the reader directly in the trench, under the barrage, and beside the dying. With a foreword by the distinguished military historian John Terraine lending vital historical context, this is an essential document of human endurance — one that asks, with quiet devastation, what glory was truly won.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Secondhand Stock","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":50573175423195,"sku":"2026100011345-SECONDHAND","price":25.0,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0523\/7646\/9701\/files\/ec222ffe-fe94-443e-988d-e823686a15d0.png?v=1791167794","url":"https:\/\/bookgrocer.com\/products\/2026100011345-secondhand-some-desperate-glory-the-diary-of-a-young-officer-1917","provider":"Book Grocer","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
