Written by James Edward Austen-Leigh, Jane Austen's nephew, this landmark work presents a tender and richly personal recollection of the aunt he knew in his youth, drawing on private letters, family anecdotes, and unpublished manuscripts to construct a portrait of the woman behind the novels. First published in 1869 — more than fifty years after Austen's death — the memoir introduced the wider Victorian public to aspects of Austen's life and character that had remained entirely unknown, including previously unseen fragments of her early writings.\n\nBeyond its biographical value, the memoir holds an extraordinary place in the history of literary reception, as it single-handedly ignited the great Austen revival of the late nineteenth century and shaped the sentimental, domestic image of the author that persisted for generations. Austen-Leigh's prose is graceful and affectionate, suffused with the elegance of the Regency world he himself had inhabited, lending the narrative an authenticity no outside observer could replicate. This Folio Society edition, graced with an introduction by novelist Fay Weldon, invites a new generation of readers to encounter not just the facts of Austen's quiet life in Hampshire, but the warmth and sharp wit that animated it — leaving one to wonder how much of the real Jane Austen has yet to be fully understood.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Secondhand Stock","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":50573346210011,"sku":"2026100011387-SECONDHAND","price":25.0,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0523\/7646\/9701\/files\/e73e4de1-997d-4478-83f0-c0e690a920cc.png?v=1791167993","url":"https:\/\/bookgrocer.com\/products\/2026100011387-secondhand-a-memoir-of-jane-austen-by-her-nephew","provider":"Book Grocer","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
