God: A Human History

$15.00
Author: Reza Aslan

Format: Hardback

Number of Pages: 320

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * The bestselling author of Zealot and host of Believer explores humanity's quest to make sense of the divine in this concise and fascinating history of our understanding of God. In Zealot, Reza Aslan replaced the staid, well-worn portrayal of Jesus of Nazareth with a startling new image of the man in all his contradictions. In his new book, Aslan takes on a subject even more immense: God, writ large. In layered prose and with thoughtful, accessible scholarship, Aslan narrates the history of religion as a remarkably cohesive attempt to understand the divine by giving it human traits and emotions. According to Aslan, this innate desire to humanize God is hardwired in our brains, making it a central feature of nearly every religious tradition. As Aslan writes, "Whether we are aware of it or not, and regardless of whether we're believers or not, what the vast majority of us think about when we think about God is a divine version of ourselves." But this projection is not without consequences. We bestow upon God not just all that is good in human nature-our compassion, our thirst for justice-but all that is bad in it: our greed, our bigotry, our penchant for violence. All these qualities inform our religions, cultures, and governments. More than just a history of our understanding of God, this book is an attempt to get to the root of this humanizing impulse in order to develop a more universal spirituality. Whether you believe in one God, many gods, or no god at all, God: A Human History will challenge the way you think about the divine and its role in our everyday lives. Praise for God "Timely, riveting, enlightening and necessary."-HuffPost "Tantalizing . . . Driven by [Reza] Aslan's grace and curiosity, God . . . helps us pan out from our troubled times, while asking us to consider a more expansive view of the divine in contemporary life."-The Seattle Times "A fascinating exploration of the interaction of our humanity and God."-Pittsburgh Post-Gazette "[Aslan's] slim, yet ambitious book [is] the story of how humans have created God with a capital G, and it's thoroughly mind-blowing."-Los Angeles Review of Books "Aslan is a born storyteller, and there is much to enjoy in this intelligent survey."-San Francisco Chronicle

Wondering about what happened to our previous Free Shipping policy? Our reasons for making this change can be found here

Change of Mind - Remainder Marks

Generally we do not accept returns due to a change of mind.

Our books are remainders which means that they occasionally have a texta mark at the base of the book.  This is one reason our prices are so low.  Unfortunately we cannot accept returns for books that are marked in this way.

Change of Mind - Mystery Boxes

We do not generally provide a change-of-mind refund simply because a Mystery Box contains books you are not interested in.  Any refunds we may give will be on a discretionary basis and will depend on the box being shipped back to us. You would be required to pay return shipping for your box.

Mystery Box - Important to Read:  We do our best to ensure that our Mystery Boxes contain books selected from a wide range of categories.  (Aside from specific Mystery Boxes such as YA Mystery, of course).  As such, you're almost certainly not going to love all the books.  However, they are about $3 each, so can be re-gifted, used for craft, used to bulk out your collection, saved for a hobby you don't yet have... it's up to you!

We will, however, provide you with a refund for any duplicates of the same title in a Mystery (or any) Box.  Please send a photograph with your email.  The refund is calculated as a proportion of the number of books in the box.

If you are concerned you might not like the books in a Mystery Box, we strongly encourage you to try one of our category boxes instead - which have the full book list published in the description.

    Damaged or incorrect orders

If you have received items that are damaged or incorrect please contact us at help@bookgrocer.com.

Please note that we will assess damages and any returns/refunds are at our discretion.  Full information about damage criteria can be found here.

If your return is accepted, we’ll send you a return shipping label, as well as instructions on how and where to send your package. Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.

Please inspect your order upon reception and contact us immediately if the item is defective, damaged or if you receive the wrong item, so that we can evaluate the issue and make it right.

    Exceptions / non-returnable items

Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on sale items or gift cards.

    Refunds

We will notify you once we’ve received and inspected your return, and let you know if the refund was approved or not. If approved, you’ll be automatically refunded on your original payment method. Please remember it can take some time for your bank or credit card company to process and post the refund too.

I LUURRRVED reading this book!!! Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth

EASILY the best and most interesting book that I have ever read. Reza Aslan is a very gifted writer who goes to admirable lengths to clearly lay out his arguments, backing them up with thorough assessment and reflection on the sources he has consulted. He demonstrates a faultless knowledge of theology, particularly Christian and Muslim, but also a myriad of other faith traditions. This book has definitely challenged much of what I thought I knew about Jesus, but has ultimately presented me with a much more raw and realistic and clearer representation of who Jesus was, as I stumble through my own journey in search of The Real Jesus. A thoroughly enjoyable read. 10/10!
