1876 is a novel by Gore Vidal, one of the most prominent and controversial American writers. It is the third book in his Narratives of Empire series, which chronicles the history of the United States from the Revolution to the post-World War II era. It is set in the year 1876, during the centennial of the nationÕs independence, and the presidential election between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden. The novel follows the adventures of Charles Schuyler, a journalist and former diplomat, who returns to America after a long exile in Europe, and becomes involved in the political and social intrigues of the time.
