Landtakers: The Story of an Epoch is a historical fiction novel by Brian Penton. It is the story of Derek Cabell, the young Englishman of good family who set out to carve a fortune for himself in Queensland in the 1840s; whose success was achieved only at drastic cost to his own personality as, with his ex-convict wife Emma at his side, he fought against drought and flood and fire and the tumultuous society of floggers, jailbirds and unprincipled adventurers in which he found himself. This is a novel which, in the thirties, and in company with Xavier Herbert's Capricornia, took Australian writing to new heights and depths of awareness. It is a story full of dust and sunlight and violence, crowded with incidents and characters, flooded with Penton's own ruthless determination to expose the greed and squalor of the convict and landtaking days. Published by Angus & Robertson.
