With the upcoming spin-off show, House of Dragon, hitting screens soon, we've noticed an increase in popularity the popular Game of Thrones series by George R.R. Martin. With so many books in the series, prequels, and sequels, we're here to prevent that overwhelming feeling of panic when you ask yourself: Where in the name of the iron throne do I start?

1. THE MAIN SERIES: A Song of Ice and Fire

While the TV show is called Game of Thrones, title of the first book of the series, the actual series itself that was adapted into the smash hit TV show is called A Song of Ice and Fire... and these books are big. You have to admit that judging by the size of these series, the TV show couldn't have captured everything. You'll just have to read to find out.

Fun fact: There are 7 books in the series, but George R.R. Martin has been writing the 6th book for a decade now... some are wondering if we'll ever get the last two books of the series.

COMING SOON (we said "soon" because he couldn't possibly wait another decade for their release... could he?)

Book 6: The Winds of Winter

Book 7: A Dream of Spring

2. THE PREQUEL: Fire and Blood

So at this point, you may be wondering: Which book is House of Dragon based on?

Here's your answer: Fire and Blood.

Fire and Blood feature three of George R.R. Martin's published novellas, The Princess and the Queen, The Rogue Prince, and The Sons of the Dragon... but more. These novellas have been expanded upon in Fire and Blood to tell the history of the Targaryen line (in other words, Daenerys' history).

3. THE PREQUEL: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

...also known as the adventures of Dunk and Egg. Follow these two knights of the realm on their journey as they navigate through Westeros, taking place a century before the events of Game of Thrones.

Originally published as three separate novellas, The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight

Of course, this blog post is only a quick guide on where to start, barely touching the surface of the high-fantasy world of political intrigue and epic battles by George R.R. Martin, but don't worry... perhaps we will re-visit this topic again.

We also have a number of different editions of these books, we recommend checking them all out on our Game of Thrones collection page.

... and that concludes our beginner's guide to Game of Thrones! You're in for a whirlwind ride on the epic fantasy series that became a world phenomenon.
P.S. George R.R. Martin, if you're reading this, when are we getting the last two books of the series?

Happy reading!
