The Heartland of Mr Legg's title is that vast area of Central Asia bounded on the North by the wastelands that stretch to the ice-bound Arctic Ocean and on the South and West by the towering mountains of the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush, roughly identical with modern Siberia and Mongolia, a land of arid plains and plateaux, bereft of outlets to any navigable sea, a land peopled until modern times by nomadic tribes whose leaders such as Chingis Khan and Tamur-East and West the scourges of the then civilised world.
