In October 1857, Aborigines attacked a sleeping homestead on the Dawson River, Queensland and killed 11 whites; only a young boy who was knocked unconscious and left for dead escaped. Over the next 10 years up to 300 Aborigines may have been killed in retaliation by the whites, led by the eldest son, William Fraser, who had been away at the time of the massacre.
