DANNY GRUBER was very interested in girls' legs, especially the higher up parts, called thighs. His favourite sideshow during the annual show was the Sparklers because the girls who stood on the platform outside the tent had extremely long legs with very little covering them. There were other attractions at the show of course, such as Punchy Mott's Boxing Troupe, or Knothole Kinter's five-legged sheep, or the prize pavilion where Danny and Tommo and Tortoise purloined the prize-winning lamingtons. At other times of the year the Kurunga showgrounds-known to everyone just as 'the showie'—was used for football matches, or the visiting circus, or as a comfortable camping spot for swaggies. In fact just about everything of any importance in Danny's life happened at the showie. The Showie is a novel about growing up. Author Ted Schurmann's lighthearted prose evocatively describes life in a small country town around 1930, and gives an insight into the events affecting Danny and the rest of the town.
