The Second World War saw 'Market Garden' as one of its most audacious and controversial operations. A joint penetration involved an armoured column and a large-scale airborne drop, aiming to breach German defenses. The war could have concluded in 1944 if it had been successful. The two-pronged attack failed to meet its objectives. British paratroopers were cut off for nine days instead of being relieved after 48 hours. The Allies eventually evacuated across the Rhine after an incredible fight against two unexpected SS Panzer divisions; of the 10,000 men involved, fewer than 2,000 survived.
