In the absence of published accounts it is difficult for readers today to realize what life must have meant to women going from England to Australia in the early days of colonisation. These extracts from the journals of Mrs Philip Gidley King, wife of the first Governor of Norfolk Island, who later succeeded Hunter as Governor of New South Wales, fill admirably this particular gap in our knowledge. The author has incorporated new facts in this second edition of her book, which had long been out of print.
