After a superb lifetime contribution to education and public life generally Sir James Darling at the age of 81 took up his pen to write the first of his "Reflections" as a fortnightly column on the Age editorial page. One of the challenges he had was to confine each of the essays to the required 600 words to fit the editorial page. That he did so in his elegant, succinct prose is a tribute to his mastery of language. More than thirty-five years after the first of his "Reflections" were published, to read these essays today, they remain as fresh, relevant and challenging as the day they were written.
