This is a novel by Australian author Thomas Keneally, published by Angus and Robertson in 1969. It is a psychological thriller that explores themes of guilt, memory, and identity. The novel follows Alec Ramsey, a retired university lecturer who was part of an Antarctic expedition in the 1920s that ended in disaster. Ramsey was the only survivor of the expedition, which claimed the life of his friend and leader Leeming. Ramsey also had an affair with Leeming's wife before the expedition, and has been haunted by his betrayal ever since. When explorers discover Leeming's body frozen in the ice after forty years, Ramsey is forced to relive his past and confront his demons The book has 282 pages It won the Captain Cook Bicentenary Award for Novel Section in 1970 It was also adapted into a television film by the ABC in 1972.
