It is a coming-of-age story of Laura Rambotham, a young girl from a rural area who has to adjust to a new and unfamiliar environment when she is sent away to a prestigious girlsÕ school in the city. Through her struggles and experiences, Laura learns the importance of wisdom and the power of self-determination. The novel is based on RichardsonÕs own experiences as a boarder at the Presbyterian LadiesÕ College in Melbourne. The novel is written with vivid and detailed descriptions of the late 19th century, with an often wickedly satirical and humorous spin. The novel is considered one of the classics of Australian literature. Published by Mercury House in 1995. It has 233 pages and includes illustrations.
