A Kind of Cattle, by Barney Roberts, is a memoir published in 1982 by Australian War Memorial & Collins. A kind of cattle is a poignant and poetic memoir of one man's experience as a prisoner of war of the Germans during the second world war. Barney Roberts was taken prisoner on 29 April 1941 at Megara on the Greek mainland. By cattle truck and forced march, he and his friends were taken to a labour camp in northern Yugoslavia where they suffered filth, overcrowding, malnourishment and illness. Barney then changed their luck by volunteering his group for a work party going to a farming community on the mountainous south-eastern border of Austria. Once there, although unable to forget that they were not free, the men immersed themselves in the routine and rigour of farm life, and raised their spirits by outwitting the local Nazis. They also discovered, in the unobtrusive kindness of some of the villagers, another face of war. Barney Roberts was only twenty-one when taken prisoner and he not only describes the physical odyssey he endured but also chronicles his journey to maturity and awareness, His war years, including his experiences in a strange 'holiday camp in Berlin, and culminating in his flight from captivity towards the advancing Russian army, profoundly affected him. His vivid and often humorous depiction of the people and events that shaped his wartime experience is counterpointed by his memories of his childhood in rural Tasmania. First Edition. Condition: Good. Dust jacket: Good. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting.
