The Pastoral Age: A Re-Examination is a book written by G.J. Abbott and published by Macmillan in 1971. It has been an axiom of Australian history that wool was the catalyst. for the social, political and economic transformations of New South Wales before 1850. A critical re-examination of the evidence for the traditional account readily reveals inadequacies. This book shows that the romantic aspects of a young developing industry have dominated and distorted the few previous authoritative histories. So, although wool certainly impelled the rapid geographic expansion of the time, there are other explanations for the economic growth which accompanied it. It is suggested that immigration and capital imports were the forces responsible and, drawing on new evidence, the author indicates lines for future research into this proposal. 1st Edition. Condition: Excellent. Dust jacket: Excellent - minor wear and protected in clear, plastic sleeve. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. May also contain a few markings such as an owner's name, short gifter's inscription or light stamp.
