There, she had an affair with her supervisor and gave birth to a son, whom she was forced to give up for adoption. Years later, she married a man who turned out to be her long-lost son. The book explores the themes of sexuality, morality, and fate, as well as the social and economic conditions of the Industrial Revolution.
