Life & Fate is a novel by Vasily Grossman, a Soviet writer and journalist. It is a sweeping epic that depicts the lives and fates of a large cast of characters during the Battle of Stalingrad and the Holocaust in World War II. It explores the themes of totalitarianism, freedom, humanism, and morality, and contrasts the ideologies of Nazism and Stalinism. The novel was considered too dangerous and subversive by the Soviet authorities, and was confiscated and banned from publication. It was smuggled out of the country and published in Switzerland in 1980. The first English translation by Robert Chandler was published by Harvill in 1985 (first edition). It has 880 pages.
