This book is a remarkable study of the life of James Douglas (1753-1819) a Manchester Grammar School boy who from his early days had a marked interest in the study of classics, natural history, geology and above all antiquity. He failed dismally in the family Manchester cotton trade to which he was put, but became an officer of note in the Austrian army, an expert on tactics and fortification, traveller in Europe, one of the earliest members, at Chatham of what was to become the Corps of Royal Engineers, a parson, a prolific writer, an amateur picture-dealer, a clever artist, and one of the most brilliant antiquaries of his day with a great devotion to the Society of Antiquaries of London. Published by Phillimore.
