In California, a boy dies horribly of a strange illness. In Indiana, horses die of a mysterious neurological disease. Jack D. Byrne, Ph.D., noted virologist and moderator of a unique Internet medical forum whose global mission is to track emerging diseases, is called upon to help diagnose these two cases. aEventually, Byrne notices a link between the two cases: they resemble the fifth and sixth plagues of the Ten Plagues of Egypt. Intrigued, he and his laboratory assistant, Drew Lawrence, look for previously unexplained outbreaks that may have been manifestations of the first four plagues. Their search unearths a sequence of bizarre and lethal outbreaks, roughly one month apart, that strikes at members of the religious right.aSuddenly, Byrne and Lawrence find themselves on the trail of a madman with a dangerously sophisticated knowledge of toxins. With the help of a suspicious FBI agent, a Yeshiva boy from Brooklyn, and a news magazine reporter, they begin an investigation that does not go unnoticed by the madman, who will go to any length to stop the team, particularly Jack. Each subsequent outbreak has a greater death toll. It is up to Byrne and his colleagues to stop him from succeeding in carrying out the final plague, one that promises to be of epidemic proportions.
