It's spring on Oland and 83-year-old Gerlof Davidsson has moved back to his summer cottage next to the old quarry, where, according to folklore, blood was once spilled in a battle between elves and trolls. Gerloff's peace is soon disturbed when he discovers his late wife's diaries and uncovers secrets from the past that have never before been told. Per Morner has also moved to the old quarry. As he struggles to care for his seriously ill daughter his estranged father turns up out of the blue needing his help. Per is determined to work out why anyone would want to kill his father, but he soon makes some very disturbing discoveries. Vendella Larrson has returned to the quarry where she once lived as a child. She remembers making wishes to the elves on her way to school. Miraculously, they always came true. Now grown-up and in an unhappy marriage, they can't still work, can they?
