Three women, all in their mid-twenties, and each from a different country, are accepted for the prestigious program at the pulitzer school of journal- ism at columbia university. We follow their different lives as they learn of their acceptances and make the journey to new york. There, they share living space with a tough, street-smart young man, and one of the three women will be swept up in a romance with him. Also figuring prominently in the novel is the asistant dean of the school, an older man who has traded on his long career as a distinguished journalist to land a top job at the school. His task is to instill the ethics of journalism, which is a crucial aspect of the curriculum. In the course of doing their investigations for class assignments, these three women compare notes and realize that the assistant dean has in truth compromised himself. He's a very sympathetic character, though, and the students must decide whether they should protect his career and compromise themselves, or expose him and end his career (while winning themselves pulitzer travelling scholarships).
