Artistry in Fiber, Vol. 1: Wall Art
Connecting us to the wide variety of contemporary fibre art in wall-mounted format, this resource combines more than 600 photos with personal comments from 100 of today's established and emerging artists. In conjunction with the other two books in this acclaimed series, it invites readers to re-examine fibre art through a multifaceted contemporary lens. The creators here are pushing the boundaries of what wall-mounted fibre art is, using fibres of paper, metal, fibreglass, milkweed seeds, or high-tech polymers. Bhakti Ziek's computerised loom work and Sue Benner's textile-collage quilts are but a few of the examples of how artists expertly combine different fibre techniques in a single piece, go beyond the technical processes, and cross-pollinate mediums. AUTHOR: Living in Lexington, Massachusetts, E. Ashley Rooney and Anne Lee had been casually acquainted for many years. They first volunteered together in 2010, curating an art show at Cary Memorial Library. Other shared art events followed, and both their friendship and their writing partnership evolved. Together, they have edited Encaustic Art in the Twenty-First Century (Schiffer) as well as this exciting series on fibre art. As coauthors, they balance each other and offer different experiences and perspectives: Ashley is the author of over fifty books, specializing in contemporary art and architecture; and Anne researched, curated, and wrote about exhibitions at Vose Galleries in Boston. Exploring fibre art together has been a fascinating and fruitful journey they are eager to share. Marcia Young is editor in chief of Fiber Art Now magazine. Meredith Re' Grimsley is a fibre artist and professor of fabric design at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. 595 colour images
