What exactly is St Paul's position on women, their role in the Church and their relation to men? Pauline passages have been used through the years to preach the subordination of women, but is this an accurate interpretation of Paul's message? Norbert Baumert sketches a different picture of Paul. With input from the writings of the early-Church fathers, he critically examines current translations of Paul's texts, uncovering sometimes stark misreadings. He also places Paul's writings within their cultural context, enabling the reader to separate the eternal message from its time-encumbered formulation. The principal part of the book presents those letters that are generally recognized as authentically Pauline. A second section examines selections from letters traditionally attributed to Paul, illustrating in the process some striking contradictions between the major Pauline letters and the Deutero-Pauline letters. Through this re-study of Paul's original language in his letters and the resulting re-construction of the text, Baumert helps readers see Paul's attitudes about gender in a revealing light. Baumert suggests that, as Christian individuals and as Church, people must allow this new light to illuminate their attitides toward men and women, sexuality, marriage and celibacy.
