From the albums and archives of the National Trust, Christopher Sykes, has brought together this collection of Victorian and Edwardian photographs. These evocative images are not only a tribute to some of the earliest pioneers of photography, but also to the great country homes of Britain. They record with nostalgia the age of a grand society, of famous family names and glittering house parties, of nannies and croquet lawns. The book is arranged house by house and follows the inheritors through succeeding generations. It gives a poignant and often amusing insight into a way of life in the Victorian and Edwardian eras which was lost forever with the coming of war. The birth of photography suitably occurred in a country house at Lacock Abbey home of Fox Talbot and this book is published in the 150th anniversary year of photography.
