150 years ago New Zealand was established as a remote British colony in the South Pacific Ocean. An uneasy accord was reached between land-hungry settlers and the original inhabitants, the Maori, with the signing of Waitangi, a unique but controversial document, the implications of which still give rise to national debate. Now, in the late 1980s, New Zealanders have to deal with crucial economic and social problems, falling personal incomes, contracting markets for its traditional primary products and rapidly growing unemployment. To meet these challenges New Zealanders need to know the background to their present predicament. This book will help to do so, paying particular attention to the position of women and the Maoris. The author has written six books on New Zealand social, regional and military projects.
