Venice at the start of the sixteenth century was one of Europe's undisputed centres of culture, home to some of the finest artists of the Italian Renaissance, whose importance stretched far beyond the region. The first great painter of the new generation was also the most mysterious: Giorgio da Castelfranco, known as Giorgione (1478-1510). Few works have been attributed to him with any certainty, yet contemporaries, most importantly the young Titian, felt his influence profoundly. In the Age of Giorgione assembles many of the works attributed to Giorgione, along with masterpieces by Titian, Lorenzo Lotto, Sebastiano del Piombo and Giovanni Cariani, among others. This sumptuous volume includes landscapes, portraits and devotional works, all exemplars of the exceptional richness of colour and mood that were to become the hallmark of the Golden Age of Venetian painting. AUTHOR: Arturo Galansino is Director of the Palazzo Strozzi, Florence. He was previously an exhibition curator at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Simone Facchinetti is Curator at the Museo Adriano Bernareggi, Bergamo. He specialises in the North Italian Renaissance, and has curated several exhibitions on North Italian artists. Their previous publications include Giovanni Battista Moroni (RA Publications). SELLING POINTS: . One pivotal decade saw a massive evolution in Venetian art, from the sensitivity of Bellini to the passion, colour and mystery of Giorgione and Titian . This book's uniqueness comes from its holistic appraisal of Giorgione's work and legacy, giving equal weight to works attributed to the artist and the influence he exerted on such contemporaries as Titian, Lotto, and Sebastiano 80 colour
