Florence Montmare: America Series
Author: Florence Montmare
Format: Hardback, 300mm x 240mm, 1040g, 128 pages
Published: Damiani, Italy, 2023
At the tail end of a pandemic and economic recession, artist and photographer Florence Montmare embarked on a photographic journey, through the U.S., to explore the traces of the climate and health crisis.
'Florence Montmare is not only a female photographer but an immigrant who was born in Vienna, raised in Stockholm, and now lives in New York. She saw America through her own outsider's lens, envisioning a very different and very modern kind of road movie.' - i-D
The first monograph by Swedish-Greek-American photographer and artist Florence Montmare showcases images made in 2021-22 while traveling across the United States from east to west (and back). Using an electric vehicle as a mobile studio, her 7000-mile roundtrip odyssey took her through nearly 30 states, on iconic roads such as Route 66 through the Midwest and I-10 across Texas and the South. Montmare encountered individuals from all walks of life, often at her frequent charging stops, and took the opportunity to ask people about their relationship to nature, and hopes and dreams for the future. As a woman and immigrant, Montmare focused on female, minority, Native American and LGBTQ perspectives and voices. The result is an unflinching, deeply personal yet universal portrayal of a transforming nation as the climate crisis alters the landscape.
Artist Florence Montmare has exhibited her work internationally: Scenes from an Island, at Fotografiska New York (2020-2021), Helsinki Photo Festival (2020), Bergmancenter Gallery (Sweden 2019), Illuminations at Ivy Brown Gallery (New York 2014, 2015), It happens in the Meeting (Sweden 2017), FRAC Lorraine, Casino Luxembourg, Saarlandmuseum, Centre d'art Contemporain du Luxembourg, and the Musee d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain, among other places. She was an artist in residence at Ingmar Bergman Estate (Sweden 2015, 2017) and is represented by Ivy Brown Gallery, New York. She is based in New York and Stockholm.
