The first part of our working title "RASCALS" is perhaps an overstatement. A rascal can of course have overtones of wrong doer, evildoer, delinquent, culprit, criminal, outlaw, felon, or convict (See Roget's Thesaurus.). Yet we cannot be certain of the reasons for a 16 year old boy stealing a watch. Was this the act of a hardened criminal, or merely an act of survival? We shall never know. That's not to say that our William was really quite nice, and just misunderstood! All we can accept is that the laws of England at that time were quite harsh by the standards of today. Our rascal then endured a long voyage with harsh living conditions as he travelled to one of the most stern penitentiaries in the world - at Port Arthur. It was certainly a battle for William. As for his descendants, however, Anna Maria's tenacity had an enduring quality that complemented the skills that Daniel brought to the partnership. From a poor, illiterate shepherd boy to a successful company director. What an amazing feat. We cannot help but believe that it was the partnership that succeeded. - Murray H. McAlister
