An English language edition of this Japanese shipping company history was published in 1985 when 100 years of maritime trading by the Mitsui OSK Lines was celebrated. Although Western business methods and technology were comparatively recent arrivals on the Japanese scene when the shipping company was formed it rapidly expanded and by 1888 was returning a profit, which provided the base for further growth. The company became one of the dominant Japanese lines, with its services gradually extending to most parts of the world. However, it was not all plain sailing for Mitsui OSK and it associate companies, with the Great Depression stifling progress between the wars and WWII decimating its fleet, with 219 OSK ships (990,000grt) lost and 79 (340,000grt) from Mitsui. At war's end only 72 servicable ships remained in the combined fleet. In the peace that followed the shipping company experienced the same trading ups and dows, grappled with changing technologies,as the industry world-wide. This is an interesting and informative study of how a shipping company, and a nation, with little tradition of oceanic mercantile trading became a successful and prominant trader on the world's oceans. First edition of 1985, 244 pages, including five appendices and chronology, 12 image colour photo section at front, numerous b/w photos in-text, decorative e/papers. Blue hard covers with silver spine titles NF, text block excellent, no inscriptions. NF colour DJ carries the reproduction of a Japanese 17th century folding screen world map.
