Published in 1887, Guatemala: The Land of the Quetzal is a richly detailed travel and ethnographic sketch by American naturalist and explorer William T. Brigham. The work chronicles Brigham's firsthand journeys through Guatemala, presenting vivid accounts of the country's diverse landscapes, indigenous peoples, flora, fauna, and ancient ruins. Written with the sharp eye of a scientist and the narrative flair of an adventurer, it details the customs, agriculture, and daily life of Guatemalan communities at a time when the country remained largely unknown to English-speaking audiences. Brigham draws on his expertise as a naturalist to illuminate the ecological wonders of Central America, including the iconic quetzal bird — a sacred symbol of freedom and national identity. A landmark of 19th-century travel literature, the volume remains a valuable historical document for scholars of Latin American culture and natural history alike.
