Nevil Shute began his career as an aeronautical engineer at Vickers before striking out to found his own airship company, an experience that would feed directly into the fiction he later wrote. He served in both world wars, and in the Second World War he held the rank of commander in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, where he worked on secret projects. His books draw heavily on what he lived through, from wartime service to the realities of the aircraft industry. He eventually flew his own aircraft to Australia to research On the Beach, and he went on to make the country his permanent home. Writing under the name Nevil Shute, he held readers spellbound with a storytelling power that enthralled millions, and in his day he became the most popular novelist in the world. Shute seemed born to tell stories, whether set in the Australian outback, the American West, Burma and Malaya, or the towns and villages of England. Again and again he celebrated the courage and decency of ordinary people, the worth of the individual in an ailing world, the strength of friendship and the force of love, set against drama, innocence and disaster. This is the complete collection in 23 volumes: A Town Like Alice, On the Beach, No Highway, Pied Piper, Chequer Board, An Old Captivity, Round the Bend, The Far Country, Requiem for a Wren, In the Wet, Beyond the Black Stump, Trustee from the Toolroom, Stephen Morris, Slide Rule, Lonely Road, The Rainbow and the Rose, Most Secret, Pastoral, What Happened to the Corbetts, Ruined City, Landfall, Marazan and So Disdained.
