It tells the story of Carrie Meeber, a young woman who moves from rural Wisconsin to Chicago, and becomes a successful actress and socialite. The novel depicts the rise and fall of Carrie and her lovers, Hurstwood and Drouet, and portrays the harsh realities of urban life, consumerism, and the American dream.
