Andy Pope is an 18-year-old Second Lieutenant in an infantry battalion, a former Territorial unit. He is younger than many of the men in his platoon, but earns their respect by handing the men well on exercise and looking after their welfare. Andy goes on to take part in two major operations (Totalise and Tractable) to smash the German lines. The story is based on the real-life struggle for Mont Ormel. Andy's company is subject to constant attacks from the Waffen SS and as the only unwounded officer left, Andy finds himself in charge of the situation.
