The collection of European drawings in the J. Paul Getty Museum has been built up over a decade and a half. It includes drawings from the Italian Renaissance, and also the German and Swiss Renaissance. The emphasis of the collection, represented in this volume, is on major draftsmen, such as David, Durer, Gainsborough, Goya, Ingres, Piranesi, Poussin, Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens, Tintoretto, Veronese and Watteau. Organized by national school, with artists represented chronologically within each, this volume focuses on the drawings in the collection which most beautifully illustrate the development of European drawing from the Renaissance onwards.
