This is a reference book covering the whole spectrum of jazz from its origins in ragtime to such contemporary innovators as "Loose Tubes". Included are entries on all the major jazz figures of the world as well as detailed evaluations of more recent practitioners such as Ornette Coleman and Joe Zawinul and in-depth coverage of lesser-known early contributors. The biographical entries provide the essential facts of the musicians life and work, followed by a brief list of their most important recordings. There are lucid definitions of Jazz terms such as bebop, cool, dirty and funk as well as essays on historical subjects such as New Orleans and Dixieland. The three authors are all jazz musicians themselves.
