Passions for the Past Hb (3rd)

The sequel to "Secrets of Lost Empires", this volume features five experimental archaeology projects which show recreations of the technological feats of ancient civilizations using only the tools available at the time. By focusing on the cultural background and technological capabilities that shaped the history of a civilization, the teams provide a practical test for both old and new historical theories. The examine the impact of an achievement on a society (the social significance of the Roman bath, for example) and the potential it created for subsequent technological progress. Subjects include: erecting an Easter Island statue; designing, building and testing a Viking ship; and looking at weapons before the arrival of gunpowder.
