This photographic book records a cross-section of Londoners in their home environment, ranging from a single man living in a tent with two dogs to a family of 17 Lubavitch Hasidic Jews. Her subjects are "ordinary" people, some of whom live in quite extraordinary circumstances. All, however, are shown how they want to be seen, be it in Sunday best or a bathrobe, with family pets or beloved possessions. The resulting images are both surprising and compelling, begging the questions, "What is a home?" and "What is a typical family?" Magda Segal was awarded "The Observer" Jane Brown Portrait Award in January 1990, and earlier in 1993, two of her photographs were selected for the John Kobal Foundation/"Independent on Sunday" Photographic Portrait Award. She works mainly with portraits, of both the famous and the obscure.
