We all have a choice. Are we girls, or are we demons? Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in Otera, a deeply patriarchal ancient kingdom, where a woman's worth is tied to her purity, and she must bleed to prove it. But when Deka bleeds gold - the colour of impurity, of a demon - she faces a consequence worse than death. She is saved by a mysterious woman who tells Deka of her true nature: she is an Alaki, a near-immortal with exceptional gifts. The stranger offers her a choice: fight for the Emperor, with others just like her, or be destroyed...

Beautiful Cover but even more beautiful Fantasy

If I was a young adult this would be a book I'd wish I was forced to read at school because I would never put it down. I'm not articulate enough to capture the essence of this book, but it is very steeped in 'Woman Power' feel. However, like life, it doesn't hide the fact there is traumatic and deep rooted life issues us young ladies have to go through. I'm going to try not ruin the ending but it's empowering and points to us as readers when we come out of the daze of being in this amazing fantasy world that We can be hero's, because we are.
