The inspiring story of Bambi Smyth who was diagnosed with a brain tumour and breast cancer in the same year. Bad Hair Year follows Bambi's journey through the 'accidental' diagnosis of her brain tumour at a party one week before Christmas, and the frightening circuit of eye specialists, neurosurgeons and radiologists she has to endure over the following months - quite spoiling her summer holiday plans.Bambi survives the operation but is left with massive scars both physically and mentally. She spends the next four months being cared for by those who love her, and in doing so finds a love for herself she'd never experienced before. The man to whom she is engaged proves that love can withstand the most intolerable of situations.Just as she's starting to feel better, and two weeks before the very next Christmas, a routine mammogram shows she has breast cancer - the same wretched disease that claimed her sister's life ten years earlier. Such a double whammy would stop most people in their tracks, but through resilience, a positive outlook, and a sense of the absurd, she manages this latest diagnosis, as well as the harrowing radiotherapy, and comes through it all even stronger and more healthy than before, and with a euphoric appreciation - every day - just to be alive. Bambi Smyth was born in Scotland and spent her first sixteen years being dragged around the world by her naval officer father. It was not until her mid-teens that she finally settled down in Melbourne, Australia, where she has since stayed put. Well, apart from regular trips around the world seeking out-of-the-way destinations where she would invariably get attacked by grumpy camels, or the odd rogue elephant. Fortunately Bambi survived such encounters, and just kept right on travelling, in-between long bouts as a freelance illustrator and children's book author. Oh, and between major health dramas too.Find out more about Bambi at www.bambismyth.com.au
