In this book, the author, himself a cricketer, presents his selection of 50 of the best innings ever played. He draws on his own reminiscences and contemporary reports and highlights each player's cricketing qualities as well as sketching the background to the innings and recounting, often in the player's words, the never-to-be-forgotten action. The text, supported by scorecards and photographs, looks at players such as Arthur Shrewsbury in 1886, Stan McCabe in 1932, Colin Milburn in 1968, Derek Randall in 1977 and Graeme Hick in 1989. Peter Roebuck made his debut for Somerset in 1974 and became captain four years later. He writes regularly for "The Sunday Times" and "The Sydney Morning Herald".
