A debate on the work of women who have used self-portraiture in the visual arts to challenge male-centred definitions of the genre. Using the feminist critiques of autobiography developed in literature, this study argues against simplistic psycho-biographical readings of self portraiture. Concentrating on the themes of autobiography, gender and sexuality it explores the personal, political and social contradictions involved for women artists in a predominantly male art world and gives insight into how women artists have exploited the medium of self-portraiture in order to voice their own identities. It reveals an array of work by women in the 20th century in the fields of painting, graphics, photography, sculpture and mixed media.
