TUTU is a celebration of the grace and extraordinary beauty of the human body: in flight, in repose and, at times, pared back to its raw and most basic essentials. Greg Barrett's superb photography captures the energy, the drama and the dangerous balance between physical capability and artistic expression. Tutu presents the entire company of The Australian Ballet, unbound by the rigours and restraint of formal performance and choreography, to record a collaboration such as has never been seen in the history of Australian dance. Frozen in the fraction of a second that is the photographic image is the whole miraculous nature of dance, pushed to its limit and, in many cases, to the limits of the dancers' own capabilities. Greg Barrett is one of Australia's foremost photographers with a special interest in the performing arts. Since becoming a professional photographer at the age of thirty-three, he has worked extensively in film direction, fashion photography, advertising and portraiture. His work forms part of the permanent collection of the National Library in Canberra, Australia and his photography is widely collected and seen as a reference point for the possibilities of what the human body can achieve in non-verbal expression. His first book, Danceshots, was published in 1993.
