The Australians were the first INTERFET troops to arrive in the violence that was East Timor in September 1999. Greatly outnumbered by the Indonesians and the militia, they found a country in ruins: the infrastructure totally destroyed, and the people traumatised. The Australians displayed discipline and restraint in the face of deliberate, sustained and aggressive confrontation and provocation, while applying whatever force was required to accomplish their mission. Australia was by far the major contributor in the early days in what was to become one of the most successful international peacekeeping efforts of all time. All Australians can feel proud of the role their forces played to enable the people of East Timor to start building their new nation.
